Men ought always to pray: Jacob's Prayer

God told Jacob to return to the Land of Canaan. Remembering the circumstances surrounding his exit from Canaan and his family's brokenness, Jacob prayed for protection, forgiveness, and renewal of the covenant God made with Abraham, his grandfather.

Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord, who said to me, "Return to your country and to your people, and I will make you prosper."

I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and compassion and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant. With only my staff long ago, I crossed over this Jordan, and now I have become blessed and increased into these two groups of people.

Save me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children.

And You Lord said, 'I will certainly make you prosper and make your descendants as numerous as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be counted.'" Genesis 32:9-12 Amplified Bible

Praying like Jacob

How we should pray using Jacob's model prayer:

  • Begin by Praising God by declaring His attributes

  • Bring God in remembrance word over your life, family, or situation and His Promises in His Word, the Bible.

  • Repent by confessing and acknowledging your Sin

  • Make your specific requests known unto God (Philippians 4:6)

  • Give God Reasons why He should answer your prayer, and remind God of what He promised.

Personalization of Jacob's Prayer

Oh God, Creator of heaven and earth, my Savior; the infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing God, I acknowledge that there is no God but you.

You have said to me (remind God of what he told you specifically/what the Bible says about your situation). I am unworthy, Oh God, of your unfailing love; forgive me of my sins and the sins of my forefathers; may the Blood of Jesus speak for us.

Intervene in the situation, oh Lord and deliver me from every evil work; work all things out for my good in Jesus' Name.

Lord, you said that You know your plans for me, plans not to harm me but to take me to a good and expected end. You promised Lord that when I call on You and pray to You, You will hear my voice and listen to me. Thank You, Lord, for Your grace and mercy; Thank You for your ear, which is attentive to my petitions. Amen

May the God of Jacob grant you divine provision, protection, healing and deliverance, in Jesus' Name, Amen.
